The Carlsbad boys soccer team got off to a tough start trying to get its offense going, falling 3-0 at Mayfield in Tuesday's district opener.
The Cavemen had nine shots on goal, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
Coach Rick Castillo said Carlsbad didn't control the ball in the midfield.
"We couldn't connect our passes well. We just didn't play with a lot of urgency," Castillo said.
Senior goalkeeper Will Fiala had seven saves.
Carlsbad (2-2) will play at 6 p.m. Thursday at Artesia prior to Saturday's home opener against Centennial.
