The Carlsbad cross country teams got the 2016 campaign underway Friday at the Clovis Invitational.

The Cavegirls were fifth out of 13 schools, while the Cavemen came in sixth out of 13 teams.

On the girls side, junior Baylee Lynn was 12th overall at 22 minutes and 6 seconds. Junior Kendal Parham was 22nd overall at 23:08. On the boys side, junior Michael Sims (18:37) was 23rd overall.

“It’s one of the goals, to see how many we can get up there [in the top 25],” coach David Gonzalez said.

About 70 runners competed in the boys and girls races, Gonzalez said.

Carlsbad will run in the Lovington Invitational at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
