Carlsbad tennis struggles at ABQ Academy

Current-Argus Staff

After a solid first two weeks to start 2016, the Carlsbad High School tennis teams had rough outings at the Albuquerque Academy tournament Friday and Saturday.

Cavemen eighth grader Grant Fritschy won one of his two singles matches and won his lone doubles match alongside freshman Max Garcia.

Cavegirls sophomores Mimi Najera and Tyra Murrill won one of their two doubles matches over the weekend.

The remaining Carlsbad players participating in the tournament lost both of their matches, whether it was in singles, doubles or one of each.

It was a different situation compared to last weekend and the weekend before that.

Two weeks ago in El Paso, multiple Carlsbad players won two or three matches.

During last weekend's Carlsbad Invitational, Carlsbad had two boys doubles teams reach the finals.

Tyra Murrill reached the finals in her bracket, while Cavemen sophomore Riley Nesbit won a boys singles title in his bracket.

Carlsbad will participate in the Sandie Cup Invitational next Friday and Saturday in Amarillo, Texas.

The Cavemen and Cavegirls will begin playing District 4-6A opponents on April 15 and the district tournament will be April 29 at Hobbs.
