Cavemen swim team third in Saturday's meet

CARLSBAD — The Carlsbad boys swim team came away with strong individual results and finished third overall in Saturday’s Carlsbad Invitational, coach Michelle White said via email that evening.

The Cavemen faced five other teams in Artesia, Andrews (Texas), Hobbs, Piedra Vista and Seminole (Texas).

Freshmen Ross Meadors (46.35 seconds) and Ryan Hernandez (50.53 seconds) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the boys 200 meter individual medley race.

In the boys 50 yard freestyle, comprised of 37 swimmers, sophomore Tony Serrano (27.81) finished tied for 11th while sophomore teammate David Duran (28.21) finished 13th overall.

Serrano (1:02.13) also finished third out of 24 in the boys 100 meter freestyle. Eighth grader Tyler Plant (1:11.45) finished second in the boys 100 meter backstroke.

The Cavemen finished with 69 team points, while Hobbs came in second place with 94 points. Andrews won the boys meet with 201 points, its second straight top-place result at the CHS Gymnasium that week.

Girls finish sixth

Carlsbad had another tough outing, finishing with 29 team points. Andrews won the girls meet with 135 points, while Piedra Vista finished second with 117 points.

Cavegirls sophomore Ashley Young (2:46.91) finished third out of 10 competitors in the girls 200 meter individual medley.

Carlsbad’s Young, Jordan Martinez, Katie Lopez and Scotti Wagner (2:08.39) finished fifth out of 11 groups in the girls 200 yard freestyle relay.

Carlsbad will be on the road for the next two months, starting with the Pecos (Texas) Invitational next Saturday.
