CARLSBAD – Carlsbad sophomore swimmer Ashley Young medaled in the girls 100 yard breastroke in Saturday's Artesia Invitational at Carlsbad High.

Young (one minute and 22.68 seconds) placed third out of 11 swimmers in that event.

“With Ashley medaling, I know it made her feel awesome,” coach Michelle White said. “We may not have kids medaling as much as they would like, but we’re seeing drops in times. I know I’ve reiterated that time and time again, but with a team that’s growing from having six seniors graduating last year, the growth that I’m seeing is a real positive direction that we’re going into. We did have some really pushing themselves and performing.”

Cavemen duo do well in boys 100 yard freestyle

Carlsbad sophomore Tony Serrano (one minutes and .25 seconds) and eighth grader Tyler Plant (1:03.03) came in sixth and seventh, respectively, out of 20 swimmers in the boys 100 yard freestyle.

“They’re both definitely putting in the time and effort into the swim, and they make sure that they’re hitting their times and improving their starts,” White said.

Team results

The boys and girls each came in fifth place out of six teams. The boys had 109 team points, while the girls had 65 team points.

Clovis won both the boys and girls meets. Alamogordo, Artesia, Hobbs and New Mexico Military Institute were the other schools participating in Saturday’s meet.

Carlsbad will host the District 3 Championships at 11 a.m. Feb. 6.

It will be the third straight time Carlsbad will swim at home, and White said her team is “loving the opportunity.”

White also said she still wants her swimmers to be “intense and ready to compete” when the district meet arrives.
