Justin Wood, Adrian Flaco win titles at JVC

Cavemen eighth grader Justin Wood reached the 138-pound championship match in Saturday's Joe Vivian Classic.

CARLSBAD -- Carlsbad wrestlers Justin Wood and Adrian Flaco were crowned champions Saturday at the Joe Vivian Classic at Albuquerque High.

Wood, an eighth grader, defeated Las Cruces’ Brandon Baeza in a 3-2 decision to win the 138-pound championship match. Flaco, a senior, defeated Belen’s Estevan Chavez in a 7-3 decision to win the 220-pound title.

Wood defeated Hobbs’ Dante Sparenburg (2-0 decision), Farmington’s Traedan Allison (11-0 major decision), Ro Grande’s Dino Mulay in three minutes and 32 seconds and Belen’s Jerry Robinson (11-2 major decision) on his way to the title match.

Flaco beat Atrisco Heritage Academy’s Gregory Fresquez-Chavez in two minutes and 39 seconds, beat Santa Fe’s Isaiah Vargas (5:04), Hobbs’ Dylan Kuhn via 4-1 decision and Centennial’s Edgar Hernandez in a tiebreaker (2-1) to reach the championship for his weight class.

Cody Wood fourth in 106-pound class

The sophomore went on to compete in the third place match, falling to Santa Fe’s Adam Pena via 6-4 decision.

For team results, the Cavemen came in 10th place out of 32 teams.

Carlsbad will take part in the Hobbs District Duals at 6 p.m. Jan. 28.
