Carlsbad hoists the City of Champions Classic tournament trophy Saturday after being host school Artesia for the title.

ARTESIA -- Compared to the previous two City of Champions Classic tournament games, Carlsbad girls basketball coach John Zumbrun sought better focus out of his players start to finish.

The message got across to them in time for Saturday's title game against host school Artesia.

The Cavegirls made shots right of the gate and shut down the Lady Bulldogs on defense en route to win the tournament championship, 57-22.

"I wanted it really bad. We've never won it since I've been in high school. It feels good to finally get it," senior forward Rylan Gonsalez said.

In the opening minutes, Carlsbad got started by knocking down three-pointers from the corners. As the lead expanded, Carlsbad bullied Artesia with its size repeatedly scoring on put-backs and on the fast break.

"It really just made us extend our lead even more," Gonsalez said. "You get those quick points, and then you're ready to play defense again."

Once the scoring sequences began, they kept going. Once Gonsalez and freshman guard Carsyn Boswell started racking up points, others got involved. Junior centers Kim Best and Teagan Rogers got their share of post touches. Seniors Caitlin Carrasco and Caitlin Clarkston helped the cause in attacking the basket.

Even players with limited playing time this year helped preserve momentum in the fourth quarter, from freshman forward Dayshaun Moore's four rebounds to a couple deep jumpers by freshman guard Jensen Leivo.

"It's just great knowing everyone contributes in a way," Boswell said. "We're just trying to keep the pace fast."

Carlsbad's intensity was also present on defense.

Players' arms flew around. Players dived for loose balls, swatted away high ones and stuck their arms out to get their hands on the ball.

"Our kids were active, focused and got their hands in the passing lanes. We played good half-court defense," Zumbrun said.

Gonsalez had a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds, plus three steals. Boswell had 17 points, three rebounds and two steals. Gonsalez, Boswell and Best were named to the all-tournament team.

Gracie Tesillo and Alissa Wagner made the all-tournament team for Artesia (3-3). Tesillo had 10 points.

Carlsbad (6-0) will host Lovington at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
