Cavegirls wear down Goddard on road

ROSWELL, N.M. -- The Carlsbad girls basketball team’s defensive press wore down Goddard fairly fast, and the Cavegirls were able to run and score en route to a 60-29 road win Tuesday.

“Our running game really took off in the second half,” coach John Zumbrun said.

Zumbrun said Carlsbad initially struggled shooting the ball, but turned things around in the final two or three minutes of the second quarter.

Carlsbad led 29-12 at halftime, but Zumbrun said multiple players on the roster got some minutes after that, continued to press and helped the cause.

“It really opened up things for our speed,” Zumbrun said.

Freshman guard Carsyn Boswell scored 27 points. Zumbrun said Boswell made plenty of fast-break layups.

“She was able to run the floor,” Zumbrun said. “It was just one of those games where she was able to get on the fast break. We play up-tempo, and it really plays into her strength, there’s no doubt about that. She really gets up that floor quick.”

Sophomore point guard Mariel Gomez scored eight points. Nine players altogether contributed on the scoring end for Carlsbad, Zumbrun said.

Carlsbad (2-0) will be back in action at 7 p.m. next Tuesday at Roswell.
